Honeywell plans 54-acre topsoil mine in Camillus to cover wastebeds, landfill

Camillus, N.Y. -- Honeywell plans to dig a 54-acre topsoil mine and use the dirt to cover a nearby landfill and waste beds.

The mine would be on Belle Isle Road, on land Honeywell owns just south of the landfill holding the dredging from the bottom of the lake. The company would dig up 180,000 cubic yards of topsoil over the next five years, according to the application filed with the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

That's equal to about 10,000 tandem dump trucks.

"The mine is intended to operate as a traditional surface mine with extraction of topsoil from above the water table," the application says.

The topsoil would be used to cover wastebeds and the portion of the town of Camillus construction and demolition landfill. The rest of the landfill will remain open.

Any movement of the soil would at first be limited to Honeywell's internal roads on the 193-acre property. The company would need separate approval from DEC permit to move the soil to other areas using public roads, the application says.

Honeywell said roads will be sprayed with water, and no dust will leave the property. The company plans to build a 10-foot high screening barrier on the southern end of the mine, near the houses on Pegasus Circle.

DEC has determined that the project "will not have a significant effect on the environment."

The application is available to the public at the DEC office at 615 Erie Blvd. W., Syracuse. DEC officials recommend calling ahead at (315) 426-7438. Comments can be submitted in writing; the deadline is May 5.
